TEMPORARY ENTRY TO CANADA
TEMPORARY ENTRY TO CANADA
Come to Canada as a visitor, worker or student:
- Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada. At the port of entry, the border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months. If you don’t get a stamp in your passport, you can stay for 6 months from the day you entered Canada or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
- Worker needs employer who will provide job offer and (LMIA) Labour Market Impact Assessment, if your employer needed to get one to hire you.
- Student- in most cases, you must apply for a study permit before coming to Canada. Make sure you have a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution in Canada before you apply.
EMPLOYERS:
- The Temporary Foreign Worker Program is intended to be used when you are facing short-term skills and labour shortages, and only when no Canadians and permanent residents are available.
- You need to apply for a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to determine if you can hire a foreign worker to fill labour or skills shortages on a temporary basis.
- An LMIA confirms there is a need for a temporary foreign worker and no Canadians are available to do the job.
How to get an LMIA
You’ll need an LMIA from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). The LMIA application process depends on the type of program you’re hiring through.
You can apply for an LMIA to hire:
- high-wage workers
- low-wage workers
- workers through the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program
- workers through the Agricultural Stream
